Journal About My Son – 5-Year Personal Challenge Begins

My lovable little son is almost 2.5-years-old now. He’s rapidly developing and saying charming 1-liners every day. I want to remember my little man’s early days as vividly as possible.

The next 5 years are sure to be a neat time. That’s why I’ve decided I want to keep a 5-year 1-sentence journal about my son. Every night, I’ll write down 1 thing he did that day. Then I’ll have a simple 5 year record of his young life between 2.5 and 7.5-years-old.

Do you have your own creative ways to record the goodness in your life? I’d love to hear about it.

In my blog this week, I’ll show you which 5-year 1-sentence journal I plan to use and how. I’m excited. 🙂

5 Years; 1 Sentence Per Day

For this 5-year challenge, I’ll be using Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project One-Sentence Journal. It corresponds to Rubin’s other book, The Happiness Project. Rubin says: “Writing one sentence a day sounds easy, and it is. At the end of the year, it adds up to a marvelous record.” The book includes about 365 pages, each representing a day of the year. Each page has 5 spaces to write a new sentence when that day rolls around each year.

I’ll write in the journal every night before going to bed, right around the time my husband and I are reading to our son. I’ll link the two activities in my mind: reading and journaling. That way I won’t forget.

Each night I’ll record one colorful sentence about what my growing son did that day, for example:

  • Adorable quotes from the young man
  • New skills he develops
  • Fun activities he takes part in
  • The people he spends time with
  • How he celebrates holidays and special occasions
  • Milestones in his life

My son’s half birthday is in a little over a week. On that day, I’ll start the journal. Looking forward!

A 5 Year Record for the Future

I like the idea of eventually having this five-year journal complete. It’ll be a wonderful five years to live, as I watch my adorable son grow. It gives me some peace of mind knowing I’ll have notes to look back on and share with him someday.

Thanks so much for reading Thoughts on the Good Life. Hope you have a beautiful week full of good things.
