Standup Desk Switch
Working at standup desks has been doing wonders in reducing my sciatic pain. I’m now working 40+ hours at various standup desks at work, home, or wherever I can find a high countertop, even Starbucks for example. I’m sharing this with you, because who knows, maybe it’ll help you or someone you know. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how much I like using a standup desk and how much it has reduced my pain, so I can focus on more interesting things and be productive.
I still have sciatic pain caused by piriformis syndrome. But using a standup desk has worked better than anything to reduce the hours of pain and numbness I experience each day. It’s significant improvement. Previously, I’ve tried chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, a cortisone injection, prescription pain killers, and yoga. I’ve mostly given up on all those remedies for now. With the standup desk I’m seeing the best results: quick and ongoing pain relief. It’s the all-day sitting that exaggerates my sciatic pain. So that’s why the simple remedy of standing up a lot more is working so darn well.
Along with using the standup desk, I go on several daily walks, which adds to my feeling good and healthy. I occasionally take an occasional ibuprofen. I’m being cautious about how I lift my toddler son. I’m still experimenting with solutions to minimize my sciatic pain, even as I use the standup desk.
It seems like it would be exhausting to stand up so much throughout the day. But strangely, it’s actually more energizing. I feel a little more fit than usual, standing up all day. I think I’m burning more calories, so I’m trying to eat a little more. And if I get tired, I just lean against my desk or sit down for a few minutes. The standup desk I have at work only cost $100 on Amazon. It’s nice but nothing fancy. It was totally worth it. At home, for now, I just use makeshift standup desks: a countertop, or a regular desk with a pile of books and my laptop on top. I get creative to avoid sitting too much.
If you’re experiencing pain and suspect a standup desk might relieve some of your pain, I encourage you to give it a try. It just might make you feel better.
First of all I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question in which I’d
like to ask if you don’t mind. I was curious to know how you
center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I’ve had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out.
I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted
just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints?
Thank you!
Thank you! I’d say, write early in the mornings. Mental clarity is usually crisp in the mornings. Start by making an outline of what you what to say. And remember what Stephen King says: “Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” So I think the most important thing is that you are putting in the work. Maybe that 10-15 minutes you “waste” is just the small price you pay to get into your creative groove. All the best to you in your writing! Happy 2020!
